Antonelli Makes History as Mercedes Lock Out Front Row

Formula 1 delivered a historic qualifying session at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, with teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli taking pole position and becoming the youngest driver ever to start a Grand Prix from the front of the grid. The 19-year-old Italian set a blistering lap of 1:32.064 for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, edging out teammate George Russell in a dominant display for the Silver Arrows.

Antonelli’s pole marks a major moment for Formula 1’s next generation. Still early in his career, the rookie has already become one of the most talked-about young drivers on the grid, replacing the legendary Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes and quickly proving that the team’s faith in youth was well placed.

Mercedes Set the Pace in Shanghai

Mercedes showed clear one-lap pace throughout qualifying at the Shanghai International Circuit. While Antonelli delivered the headline moment, Russell also impressed by securing second place despite technical issues in the final session. The British driver managed to complete just one competitive flying lap after experiencing battery and gearbox problems but still locked out the front row for Mercedes.  For fans in the UK, Russell’s performance continues a strong start to the season, reinforcing Mercedes as a serious contender for both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships.

Ferrari Close Behind

Ferrari also showed encouraging pace in qualifying. Seven-time world champion Hamilton, now racing in red, qualified third, while teammate Charles Leclerc secured fourth position. The result positions Ferrari as the closest challenger to Mercedes heading into Sunday’s race. Hamilton’s move to Ferrari remains one of the sport’s biggest storylines, and a podium challenge from third on the grid could provide an early statement for the Scuderia this season.

McLaren Solid but Not Spectacular

McLaren F1 Team drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris rounded out the top six, delivering a respectable but slightly underwhelming qualifying session compared to the pace shown by Mercedes and Ferrari. The pair will likely rely on strategy and race pace if they hope to challenge for the podium on Sunday

Struggles for Red Bull

A surprising storyline from qualifying was the lack of pace from Red Bull Racing. Three-time world champion Max Verstappen could only manage eighth place after reporting significant handling issues with the car. His teammate Isack Hadjar lined up ninth, suggesting the team faces a major setup challenge ahead of the race.
